  8. Below are some of the features included in the NEXTSTEP User
  9. Release 3.2 scheduled for early-mid Fall, including:

  32. and configuring NEXTSTEP Release 3 for Intel Processors, and Here's

  49. Intel platform support enhancements:

  51. # Third-parties Boot Drivers support
  52. Release 3.2 has been enhanced to enable the dynamic loading
  53. of boot drivers for devices such as SCSI drives and CD-ROM
  54. drives.  This feature will greatly increase the number of
  55. configurations NEXTSTEP can support.

  57. # Third-parties Sound Drivers support
  58. A new set of public API's has been added to the SoundKit to
  59. enable developers to develop sound drivers that can be
  60. dynamically loaded into NEXTSTEP at run time.

  62. # 32 bit Color support
  63. The WindowServer has been enhanced to support third-party
  64. 32 bit graphics drivers.

  66. # Enhanced Pentium support
  67. Release 3.2 has been enhanced to take advantage of the
  68. Pentium processor for better graphics performance.

  70. # Additional Graphic Drivers support
  71. The ATI Graphics Ultra Pro and S3 805 drivers have been
  72. enhanced to provide support for additional RAM DAC and
  73. resolutions.  In addition, S3 928 support has been added to
  74. Release 3.2.

  76. # Additional Sound Drivers support
  77. Support for Compaq Business Audio, Microsoft Sound System,
  78. and Intel GX Professional on-board sound system has been
  79. added to Release 3.2.

  81. BUNDLED SoftPC DEMO

  84. A demo version of SoftPC will be bundled with Release 3.2. To
  85. unlock this demo version into a full working copy, users can simply
  86. call Insignia and purchase a license number to unlock it into a
  87. full working copy.  NeXT has been working closely with Insignia to
  88. develop the best solution possible to run DOS/Windows applications
  89. under NEXTSTEP for Intel Processors.  In order to optimize the
  90. performance of SoftPC, NeXT has enhanced NEXTSTEP's window server
  91. to dramatically improve the performance of Microsoft Windows
  92. applications in a NEXTSTEP window while providing full cut/paste
  93. graphics and text integration with your NEXTSTEP applications.  In
  94. addition SoftPC will support a full screen mode to allow
  95. DOS/Windows applications direct access to the PC's graphics system.

  97. Other NEXTSTEP Enhancements

  99. # Network Install
  100. To simplify the installation of NEXTSTEP for Intel processors at
  101. large sites, the core technology for network installation have been
  102. added to this Release.  NeXT will ship some additional tools after
  103. 3.2 ships which will enable users and system administrators to
  104. install NEXTSTEP with a boot floppy and a network server.

  106. # Startup and Shutdown Graphics mode
  107. To improve the consistency of NEXTSTEP's "look and feel", the
  108. startup and shutdown of NEXTSTEP will be displayed with a graphical
  109. user interface.

  111. # Configuration cleanup
  112. The configuration application has been refined to improve "ease of
  113. use" and enhanced to support additional configurations.

  115. # Additional On-line help
  116. On-line help has been added to the Edit (in developer mode) and
  117. PrintManager application.

  119. # Bug fixing
  120. Over 500 bug fixes have been made based on customer feedback.
